wasn't dry yet. I used a little tin pail with a tight lid for the milk, and my
mare normally didn't care at all when my hand and that pail together would grab

It rarely includes a subject, and its verb is a secondary verb form (infinitival, gerund-participle or past participle) which cannot be inflected for tense, person, or number. It is a dependent clause serving as a subject or a complement to a verb, preposition, or noun. These three adverb types - manner, time, and place - are collectively known as circumstantial adverbs.
