Standing Quietly
Few years ago, our family had owned horses. We also owned a few milk goats. At the time, I was pasturing them about two miles from home and riding my mare to the pasture every day to milk the one goat that wasn't dry yet. I used a little tin pail with a tight lid for the milk, and my mare normally didn't care at all when my hand and that pail together would grab the horn as I mounted - except on this day.
As I got ready to mount, mother and I had some conversation. The mare must have dozed off while waiting. Conversation over, I shoved my foot in the stirrup as I grabbed the horn with the pail in my hand. The mare leaped into a gallop. There I was with my foot wedged in the stirrup, hanging at arm's length from the saddle horn. With the road rushing past my head, I somehow found the strength to pull myself up and into the saddle. I slowed the mare down to a trot and waved at mother half a block behind to show her that I was okay.
It's amazing what strength we have in an emergency. It's also amazing what kind of advice we can get from some "experts". Somewhere just recently I read some instructions on mounting that said to put your foot deep into the stirrup. This is a very dangerous practice. If I had known that day years ago to put just my toes in the stirrup, my foot would have slipped out the moment the mare leaped ahead, and I wouldn't have scared myself and my mother half to death.

Sherly : Do you have a brother, Tika?
Tika : I don't have a brother, but if I did have one, I would want him to be my best friend. I think I would do what he asks.
Sherly : My brother would never ask me because he knows I would never give him one. We don't have a very good relationship. If my parents asked me where he was, I'd tell them.
Elma : I would hate it if this happened to me. If I were you, I would tell my problem to my brother.
Sherly : You're right. If I had had a good relationship with my brother, he would have accompanied me to Rina's birthday party.
Tika : What? You didn't come? lfl hadn't helped Rina's mother in the kitchen, I would have known who came to the party.
Sherly : Yes. If my father had canceled his meeting, he would have taken me there.
Elma : I think you should approach your brother from now on.
