Every day, people relay messages from one person to another. Whether it is to prove a point, describe an event, or disclose an opinion, we use the freedom of speech to share information. There are generally two ways of reporting a spoken idea: direct and indirect speech. This article shall explain and compare these two types of speech. Some examples are also provided to give you a more in-depth understanding.<h2 style="background-color: #ffdc81; border-bottom-right-radius: 10px; border-top-right-radius: 10px; border: 0px; box-shadow: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.12) 1px 2px 3px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #0a3252; font-family: Quicksand, sans-serif; font-size: 30px; line-height: 1.2em; margin: 30px 0px 30px -30px; padding: 10px 20px;">Direct and Indirect Speech</h2>Both direct and <a data-lasso-id="891" href="https://7esl.com/reported-speech/" style="box-sizing: inherit; color: #089cc4; cursor: pointer; text-decoration-line: none; transition: color 0.1s ease-in-out, background-color 0.1s ease-in-out;">indirect speech</a> are methods to narrate the words spoken by a specific person. The difference between them lies in how they are constructed and in the purpose of using them.<h3 style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #0979b8; font-family: Quicksand, sans-serif; font-size: 25px; line-height: 1.2em; margin: 0px 0px 20px; padding: 0px;">Direct Speech</h3>In a <a data-lasso-id="892" href="https://7esl.com/direct-speech/" style="box-sizing: inherit; color: #089cc4; cursor: pointer; text-decoration-line: none; transition: color 0.1s ease-in-out, background-color 0.1s ease-in-out;">direct speech</a>, the actual words of the speaker are quoted explicitly. It is often used to relay something being said in the present tense. It can also be used to recall the exact words of the speaker when retelling a previous conversation. You can recognize a direct speech instantly because it has a text enclosed in a set of quotation marks. That text or idea is known as the <a data-lasso-id="893" href="https://7esl.com/reported-speech/" style="box-sizing: inherit; color: #089cc4; cursor: pointer; text-decoration-line: none; transition: color 0.1s ease-in-out, background-color 0.1s ease-in-out;">reported speech</a>.Examples:<ul style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #0d1a26; font-family: Quicksand, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; list-style-image: initial; list-style-position: initial; margin: 0px 0px 1.5em 3em; padding: 0px;"><li style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">He says, “I want to adopt a dog.”</li><li style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Julia asks, “What do you want to have for dinner?”</li><li style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Penny answers, “I would like to have some soup.”</li><li style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">“I have a new job,” Kyle says to us.</li><li style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">“I will be working as a virtual assistant,” he added.</li></ul>As you can see, direct speech can be presented in different tenses: past, present, or future. It depends on when the actual words were spoken and when the reporter is retelling them. Also, reporting verbs (say, ask, answer, etc.) are not necessarily placed before the quoted text. You can also place them after it.This type of speech is often used in writing novels or telling a story. This is because it gives the text a more actual and realistic effect.<h3 style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #0979b8; font-family: Quicksand, sans-serif; font-size: 25px; line-height: 1.2em; margin: 0px 0px 20px; padding: 0px;">Indirect Speech</h3>Indirect speech is usually used to relay what was being said by the speaker without directly quoting the original words. In this case, the tense of the sentence is typically changed. Reporting verbs, such as say, tell, ask, and others, are used as an introduction. The words of the original speaker will not be enclosed inside the quotation marks. Instead, the word “that” is used to connect the reporting verb to the reported text.Examples:<ul style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #0d1a26; font-family: Quicksand, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; list-style-image: initial; list-style-position: initial; margin: 0px 0px 1.5em 3em; padding: 0px;"><li style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">He says that he wants to adopt a dog.</li><li style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Julia asks Penny what she wants for dinner.</li><li style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Penny answers that she would like to have some soup.</li><li style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Kyle told us that he got a new job.</li><li style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">He added that he will be working as a virtual assistant.</li></ul>The above sentences are actually converted from the previous examples of direct speech. Aside from eliminating the quotation marks, correct pronouns are also used. Additionally, the reporting verbs are now all found before the reported speech. The reporting verb is then followed with “that.”<h2 style="background-color: #ffdc81; border-bottom-right-radius: 10px; border-top-right-radius: 10px; border: 0px; box-shadow: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.12) 1px 2px 3px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #0a3252; font-family: Quicksand, sans-serif; font-size: 30px; line-height: 1.2em; margin: 30px 0px 30px -30px; padding: 10px 20px;">Converting Direct to Indirect Speech</h2>Now, let us specify the rules in converting direct speech to indirect speech. Here are the steps on how to do so:<h3 style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #0979b8; font-family: Quicksand, sans-serif; font-size: 25px; line-height: 1.2em; margin: 0px 0px 20px; padding: 0px;"><span class="ez-toc-section" ez-toc-data-id="#1_Eliminate_the_quotation_marks_that_enclose_the_relayed_text" id="1_Eliminate_the_quotation_marks_that_enclose_the_relayed_text" style="box-sizing: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;">1. Eliminate the quotation marks that enclose the relayed text.</h3>The <a data-lasso-id="894" href="https://7esl.com/quotation-marks/#:~:text=Quotation%20Marks-,What%20Are%20Quotation%20Marks,alternate%20use%20of%20a%20word." style="box-sizing: inherit; color: #089cc4; cursor: pointer; text-decoration-line: none; transition: color 0.1s ease-in-out, background-color 0.1s ease-in-out;">quotation marks</a> are the primary indication of a direct speech. Therefore, it is crucial to take them out if you are forming an indirect one.<h3 style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #0979b8; font-family: Quicksand, sans-serif; font-size: 25px; line-height: 1.2em; margin: 0px 0px 20px; padding: 0px;"><span class="ez-toc-section" ez-toc-data-id="#2_Retain_the_tense_of_the_reporting_verb_and_add_the_word_“that”_after_it" id="2_Retain_the_tense_of_the_reporting_verb_and_add_the_word_%E2%80%9Cthat%E2%80%9D_after_it" style="box-sizing: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;">2. Retain the tense of the reporting verb and add the word “that” after it.</h3>You have to retain the tense of the <a data-lasso-id="895" href="https://7esl.com/introductory-verbs-reported-speech/" style="box-sizing: inherit; color: #089cc4; cursor: pointer; text-decoration-line: none; transition: color 0.1s ease-in-out, background-color 0.1s ease-in-out;">reporting verb</a> to allow consistency of reports. Instead of placing a comma to separate the reporting clause from the reported one, the word “that” is added. However, if the reported speech is a yes-no question, you use “if” instead of “that.” If the question starts with who, what, when, where, etc., no additional words are needed. Instead, you have to rearrange the sentence into a declarative form.Example:<ul style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #0d1a26; font-family: Quicksand, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; list-style-image: initial; list-style-position: initial; margin: 0px 0px 1.5em 3em; padding: 0px;"><li style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Direct Speech: She says, “I want to go to Paris.”</li><li style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Indirect Speech: She says that she wants to go to Paris.</li><li style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Direct Speech: She asks, “Do you want to go to Paris?”</li><li style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Indirect Speech: She asks me if I want to go to Paris.</li><li style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Direct Speech: “Ms. Thompson, where are you going?” I asked.</li><li style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Indirect Speech: I asked Ms. Thompson where she was going.</li></ul><h3 style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #0979b8; font-family: Quicksand, sans-serif; font-size: 25px; line-height: 1.2em; margin: 0px 0px 20px; padding: 0px;"><span class="ez-toc-section" ez-toc-data-id="#3_Change_the_tense_of_the_verb_in_the_reported_speech_if_needed" id="3_Change_the_tense_of_the_verb_in_the_reported_speech_if_needed" style="box-sizing: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;">3. Change the tense of the verb in the reported speech, if needed.</h3>If the <a data-lasso-id="896" href="https://7esl.com/introductory-verbs-reported-speech/" style="box-sizing: inherit; color: #089cc4; cursor: pointer; text-decoration-line: none; transition: color 0.1s ease-in-out, background-color 0.1s ease-in-out;">reporting verb</a> is in the past tense, you should change the tense of the verb inside the reported speech into its past tense. This is not necessary if the reporting verb is in the present or future tense.Examples:<ul style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #0d1a26; font-family: Quicksand, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; list-style-image: initial; list-style-position: initial; margin: 0px 0px 1.5em 3em; padding: 0px;"><li style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Direct Speech: He said, “I am watching a new TV series.”</li><li style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Indirect Speech: He said that he was watching a new TV series.</li><li style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Direct Speech: He says, “I am watching a new TV series.”</li><li style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Indirect Speech: He says that he is watching a new TV series.</li></ul>Of course, you have to consider the correlation between the report and the idea on the quoted text. Sometimes, a change in <a data-lasso-id="897" href="https://7esl.com/verb-tenses/" style="box-sizing: inherit; color: #089cc4; cursor: pointer; text-decoration-line: none; transition: color 0.1s ease-in-out, background-color 0.1s ease-in-out;">tense</a> is not needed even if the reporting verb is in the past tense.Examples:<ul style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #0d1a26; font-family: Quicksand, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; list-style-image: initial; list-style-position: initial; margin: 0px 0px 1.5em 3em; padding: 0px;"><li style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Direct Speech: He said, “I will be watching a new TV series.”</li><li style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Indirect Speech: He said that he will be watching a new TV series.</li><li style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Direct Speech: He said, “I watch TV series every night.”</li><li style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Indirect Speech: He said that he watches TV series every night.</li></ul>For the first example, the quoted text is still about to happen. So, you don’t need to change the tense of the sentence inside the quotation. For the second example, watching TV series is implied as a habitual action. Therefore, you still have to retain the present tense of the verb.<h3 style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #0979b8; font-family: Quicksand, sans-serif; font-size: 25px; line-height: 1.2em; margin: 0px 0px 20px; padding: 0px;">4. Change the pronouns accordingly.</h3>You should also change the pronoun based on who the speaker, doer, and receiver of the action is.Example:<ul style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #0d1a26; font-family: Quicksand, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; list-style-image: initial; list-style-position: initial; margin: 0px 0px 1.5em 3em; padding: 0px;"><li style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Direct Speech: Wendy says, “Ron, you should take care of yourself.”</li><li style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Indirect Speech: Wendy told Ron that he should take care of himself.</li></ul>Appropriate <a data-lasso-id="898" href="https://7esl.com/changes-pronouns-reported-speech/" style="box-sizing: inherit; color: #089cc4; cursor: pointer; text-decoration-line: none; transition: color 0.1s ease-in-out, background-color 0.1s ease-in-out;">changing of pronouns</a> is done to avoid misunderstanding the whole text. If pronouns are not changed, it might confuse the reader or the listener as to who is saying or doing the action. The change in pronouns gives rise to changes in the plurality of the verb used. That being said, you have to consider and follow correct <a data-lasso-id="899" href="https://7esl.com/subject-verb-agreement/" style="box-sizing: inherit; color: #089cc4; cursor: pointer; text-decoration-line: none; The Park Day

Agustus 19, 2024 http://bambangharyanto21.madrasah.id 0

THE PARK DAY<o:p></o:p>

Annabel
walked through a park near Cherry Tree Lane reading over her shopping list. She
also pondered whether the money Michael Banks, her father, gave was enough for
all the needs.<o:p></o:p>

"Father
didn't give us enough money, did he? What can we do?" she asked her twin
brother, John Banks.<o:p></o:p>

"Why
not see if you can get a discount for yesterday's bread? That's what mother
used to do?"<o:p></o:p>

The
youngest child,<o:p></o:p>

Georgie,
brightened as he saw Miss Lark, the wealthy neighbor, strolling through the
park.<o:p></o:p>

"Hello,
Miss Lark" greeted Georgie.<o:p></o:p>

"Oh...hello,
Georgie."<o:p></o:p>

"Georgie!
Come on, hurry up. There really just isn't enough time in the day to do
that." John screamed out while standing some distance away.<o:p></o:p>

Georgie
noticed a balloon lady in the park. "Can we buy a balloon for me?" he
asked<o:p></o:p>

"Oh,
no Georgie." answered Annabel. "We don't have enough for
groceries."<o:p></o:p>

The park
keeper suddenly appeared and called to Georgie, "Hey, Georgie Banks...
Keep off the grass. I have spent the whole day caring for the grass and I don't
want anyone tramples my grass and ruin my whole days work. Get out of
there!"<o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>Georgie
sighed reluctantly because he actually would rather walk on the green grass
than on the path.

John
turned to Annabel, "What if Father loses the house?"<o:p></o:p>

"We'll
figure out a way how to get the house back." replied Annabel shortly.<o:p></o:p>

Far above
the clouds, a kite swung up and hit the shoulder and then the hat of a man who
was sitting reading on a park bench. The man didn't react, he kept reading his
book as though nothing had happened.<o:p></o:p>

Georgie
who was walking behind his brother and sister suddenly saw the kite tumbled
past him. Without thinking twice, he immediately chased after it.<o:p></o:p>

"Georgie...
Georgie...." John and Annabel started after Georgie, but the park keeper
saw them and yelled, "Keep off the grass!"<o:p></o:p>

"But,
our brother......"<o:p></o:p>

"I
said keep off the grass. Can you hear me?"<o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>A gust of
wind sent the kite over the hedge. Georgie crossed the grass field and went
into the bushes. He scrambled through the bushes into the open field. His
clothes were covered in mud. Georgie chased towards the kite. The kite was
leaning against a stone bridge as if it were waiting for him. Georgie took the
kite, pulled out the spool of the string and tried to fly the kite into the
air.

<o:p> </o:p>Suddenly
clouds gathered and roiled, the wind blew violently dragging Georgie off his
feet as the kite soared up into the sky and through the clouds.

<o:p> </o:p>"Help...help..."
Annabel and John heard Georgie asking for help. The twins hopped onto the
grass, rushed across the field and scrambled through the bushes. "We're
coming, Georgie." said Annabel in fear.

<o:p> </o:p>At the
same time, Jack, the streetlamp lighter of the Cherry Tree Lane passed by on
his bicycle. When he saw Georgie was carried by the wind, he stopped and
hurried to rescue Georgie.

<o:p> </o:p>"Hold
on... Georgie!" Jack managed to grab Georgie, and with all his might, he
brought him crashing to the floor. Afterward, both began to pull on the kite
string with all their might.

<o:p> </o:p>All at
once, the sky got calm, the clouds parted and a figure of a beautiful woman
dressed in a long coat, scarf and eccentric hat appeared.

<o:p> </o:p>Mary
Poppins landed and she addressed Georgie, "You should be very careful when
the wind rises. You nearly lost your kite."

<o:p> </o:p>Just in
time, the twins came. They had seen the last five minutes when Mary Poppins
landed on the ground. "And you too, Annabel and John, you nearly lost
Georgie. He might have gone away forever if I hadn't held the end of the
string. My goodness, what have you done with your clothes, twins? There is so
much mud your clothes, twins on your clothes."

"How
do you know our names?" asked Annabel in an unpleasant tone.

Jack with
a beaming face said, "Of course. Because she is Mary Poppins! Mary
Poppins, may I say that you have always looked beautiful from then until
now?" "Do you think so? Nice to meet you, Jack."<o:p></o:p>

"Good
to see you too, Mary Poppins."<o:p></o:p>

"Children,
when I was at your age, I met Mary Poppins for the first time. I was working as
a chimney sweeper at the time."<o:p></o:p>

Jack
handed the kite to Georgie.<o:p></o:p>

"Well,
I have to talk to your father. You need a nanny immediately." Mary Poppins
told them in no clear terms.<o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>Mary
Poppins marched off with Georgie at her side. She carried her carpetbag in one
hand and has a parrot headed umbrella tucked under her arm. Annabel and John
followed her with a puzzled glance. Jack picked up his bike off the ground and
rode it following behind them.

The flaw in the plan

Agustus 12, 2024 http://bambangharyanto21.madrasah.id 0

HE FLAW IN THE PLAN<o:p></o:p>

Harry was thrown face down on the
ground. He could feel the cold and hard the ground beneath his cheeks. The
hinges of his glasses fell sideways and injured his cheek. The smell of the
forest trees filled his nostrils. Every inch of his body ached because the
Killing Curse had hit him. It felt like the bruise of an iron-clad punch. His
body didn't move, his eyes were tightly shut, but slowly he gained his senses.
He thought to hear a cheer of triumph and jubilation of his death, but he heard
hurried steps instead.<o:p></o:p>

"My Lord...my Lord.."<o:p></o:p>

It was Bellatrix' voice. Harry
did not dare to open his eyes. His wand still stowed beneath his robes.<o:p></o:p>

"That will do," said
Voldemort's voice.<o:p></o:p>

Apparently, in the battle between
Harry Potter and Voldemort, both had fallen hard to the ground and both passed
out. Now, they had retuned conscious. The Death Eaters bundled up around
Voldemort,' their master.<o:p></o:p>

"My Lord, let me help you
stand up." said Bellatrix, pleading earnestly.<o:p></o:p>

"No need. I don't require
assistance." Said Voldemort coldly. Harry thought loudly,
"Oh......Bellatrix hasn't died, has she?"<o:p></o:p>

"You!" Voldemort
screamed. His voice sounded like a small shriek of pain. "Examine him and
tell me whether he is already dead."<o:p></o:p>

Harry did not know who was sent
to examine him. His heart beat fast. Later he felt a woman's hand touched his
face and felt his heart.<o:p></o:p>

"Is my son, Draco alive? Is
he in the castle?"<o:p></o:p>

She whispered quietly, barely
audible in Harry's ear. Her head bowed so low that her long hair shielded his
face from the onlookers.<o:p></o:p>

"Yes." answered Harry.<o:p></o:p>

For a moment her eyes lit up, her
nails pierced him. Then it was withdrawn. She sat up. "He is dead."
Narcissa Malfoy called to the onlookers.<o:p></o:p>

They shouted and yelled in
triumph and stamped their feet. Through his eyelid's, Harry could see the
celebration.<o:p></o:p>

"You see yourself, don't
you?" screeched Voldemort in the hubbub. "Harry Potter is dead by my
hand. No one alive can threaten me now. Now, we head to the castle and show
them what has happened to their hero. But wait.... who shall drag his
body?"<o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

There was silence for a moment.<o:p></o:p>

"You, Hagrid. You shall
carry him. Your little friend will be nice in your arms, won't he? Put on his
glasses so that everyone can recognize him well."<o:p></o:p>

Hagrid's strong arms uplifted
Harry gently. Harry could feel Hagrid's arms trembled in result of holding back
his tears. Ultimately, he broke down in fresh tears while carrying Harry in his
arms. Harry did not dare to tell Hagrid that it was not over yet.<o:p></o:p>

Hagrid forced his way through the
forest trees. As they went, the Death Eaters who were guarding him shouted
insults at the Centaurs.<o:p></o:p>

Harry knew that they were heading
to the castle. Unexpectedly, Hagrid bellowed to the Centaurs, "Are you
happy now? Even, you did not fight fiercely. You're just fussy. You are happy
that Harry Potter is dead, aren't you?"<o:p></o:p>

"Stop"<o:p></o:p>

"Hi, Hogwarts' school
students, listen to me! I have won the battle. You have lost half of your
fighters. My Death Eaters outnumbered your fighters. It is finished. No more
war. Those who resist will be slaughtered. Get out of the castle and kneel before
me and you will be safe!" Lord Voldemort's voice boomed in pride.<o:p></o:p>

"Set him down, Hagrid!"
he said to Hagrid, "At my feet, where he deserves." Harry felt
himself lowered onto the grass.<o:p></o:p>

"You see that now,"
Voldemort shouted in a delighted tone. "Harry Potter has been killed!
You've been cheated, all of you. Oh, you, deluded ones! He's nothing. He was
just a boy who took benefit from other people to sacrifice themselves for his
own sake."<o:p></o:p>

"He was murdered while
trying to leave the castle grounds and died without a struggle while attempting
to rescue himself." Voldemort said. There was a tone of relished in his
voice while telling a lie.<o:p></o:p>
