What Makes a Roller Coaster Roll? What's your favorite ride at an amusement park? For many people, it's a roller coaster. No matter how high or how long, all roller coasters work in the same way. They depend on energy and gravity.

Some roller coaster cars look similar to the passenger cars on a train. But a roller coaster car has no engine or other source of power. The only help it gets is on the very first piece of track. That's when the car is pulled up the first hill, usually by a chain lift. After that, gravity takes over. The farther the car goes up, the farther it has to come down. As the car goes up, it collects energy. This energy gets used as the car zooms down the hill. That makes a new kind of energy. The new energy makes the car speed up the next hill.

The constant exchange of energy keeps the roller coaster going. That's why a roller coaster can go for hundreds of feet at high speeds. Some of the longest coasters have track that is a mile long.
