Finite and Non-finite Clauses

<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /><br /></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: medium;">The class "circumstance" represents the circumstance. It can be adverb, prepositional phrase or noun clause (infinitive clause or participle clause), what is decided by the attribute "type". Its attribute "position" represents the position of the circumstance in the sentence: pre, mid, or post, and the "attribute" represents its semantic function in the whole sentence: place, time, way, and others. We have discussed adverbs, prepositional phrases, and the attribute type to describe. circumstances in the previous part. We can also use clauses to describe circumstances. A clause is divided into two: finite and non-finite. Now, we are going to discuss about finite and non-finite clauses which function as circumstances.</span></div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br />1 . Finite Clause<br /><br />A finite clause is .a clause which has a finite verb. Finite clause can be either dependent or independent. Finite clauses must contain a verb which shows tense. They can be main clauses or subordinate clauses.<br /><br />Example:<br /><br />The phone rang while I was watching TV. (main clause: past, subordinate clause: past; rang is a finite verb, I was watching TV; finite clause) There are three main types of finite dependent clauses: that-clauses, adverbial clauses, Wh-clauses (may also be independent).<br /><br />a. That-clauses<br />They function as subject, object, complement. </span><div><span style="font-size: medium;">Example: I know that you are an athlete.</span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span><div><span style="font-size: medium;">b. Adverbial clauses</span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">They function as adverbs.</span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;">Example: I went to school when my mother went to the market.<br /><br />c. Wh-clauses</span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;">They include who, whom, whose, which, why, when, where, and how.</span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;">Example: I want to go to a place where there is a beach.<br /><br />2. Non-finite Clause<br /><br /></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: medium;">A non-finite clause is a clause which does not have a finite verb. A non-finite clause cannot stand alone. It rarely includes a subject, and its verb is a secondary verb form (infinitival, gerund-participle or past participle) which cannot be inflected for tense, person, or number. It is a dependent clause serving as a subject or a complement to a verb, preposition, or noun. Non-finite clauses are usually subordinate clauses.</span></div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br />Example:<br /></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Watching TV, the phone rang. Finite clause can be either dependent or independent. In contrast, non-finite clauses are those clauses formed with a non-finite verb, a verbal element which is not marked for tense, person, or number. We use adverbs to give more information about the verb. Many adverbs convey information about the manner, time, or place of an event or action. These three adverb types - manner, time, and place - are collectively known as circumstantial adverbs. They express one of the circumstances relating to an event or action how it happened (manner), when it happened (time), or where it happened (place). Circumstantial adverbs are, also called circumstance adverbs. In conclusion, circumstance adverbs tell us more about the action of the verb. Although adjectives and adjectives phrases most frequently function to describe nouns, there are five grammatical forms which can perform the grammatical function of noun phrase modifiers. They are:</span></div><div><ul><li><span style="font-size: medium;">Noun phrase, for example, My <u>bathroom door</u> is broken.</span></li><li><span style="font-size: medium;">Adjective phrase, for example, <u>The beautiful girl</u> bought a pink bag.</span></li><li><span style="font-size: medium;">Verb phrase, for example, <u>The girl singing loudly</u> is my classmate.</span></li><li><span style="font-size: medium;">Prepositional phrase, for example, The man in <u>red coat</u> is my uncle.</span></li><li><span style="font-size: medium;">Adjective clauses, for example, I met the boy <u>who cried in the park </u>yesterday.</span></li></ul></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;">We have discussed kinds of modifiers used in noun phrases in the previous part. Now, we are going to focus on post-modifiers in the form of prepositional phrase and adjective clause. They are the most common post-modifiers.</span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div><div><span style="font-size: medium;">Modifiers are words, phrases, or clauses that provide description in sentences. Modifiers allow writers to take the picture that they have in their heads and transfer it accurately to the heads of their readers. </span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;">1. Prepositional Phrase (Determiner+ Head + Prepositional Phrase) </span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;">A prepositional phrase is the preposition and the object of the preposition together. Prepositions include direction, place, time, cause, manner, and amount. The following are examples of noun phrases with modifiers in the form of prepositional phrase. ·</span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;">a. The bag under the chair is mine.</span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;">b. The plant on the window gets a lot of sunlight.</span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;">c. The old house between the shops belongs to Mr. Hasan.</span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;">d. The meeting at three o'clock was cancelled.</span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;">2. Adjective Clause (Determiner+ Head+ Adjective Clause)</span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;">An adjective clause is also called a relative clause. A clause is a group of words that has a subject and predicate. There are two kinds of adjective clause: finite and non-finite. Adjective clause can perform as noun phrase modifiers.</span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;">a. Finite Adjective Clause</span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;">A finite clause may stand alone as a complete sentence. They depend on another clause to have meaning. Finite clauses usually use subordinating conjunctions, such as who, when, what, how, that, since, etc.</span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;">The following are examples of noun phrases with modifiers in the form of finite adjective clause.</span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;">The boy who is crying is Arya's brother.</span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;">A book that you ordered is now available.</span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;">The map that I found is expensive.</span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;">The shoes which you bought are similar to mine.</span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;">b. Non-finite Adjective Clause</span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;">A non-finite clause cannot stand on its own, Modifiers in the form of participle phrase and to infinitive belong to non-finite adjective clause. The following are examples of noun phrases with modifiers in the form of non-finite adjective clause.
